Welcome!Welcome to the web site of the District of Columbia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
Our city and its surrounding areas boast a lively pipe organ culture, to which our Chapter members contribute significantly. We invite all who love the pipe organ and its music to explore this website for opportunities to attend AGO-sponsored events as well as concerts in our churches and concert halls. All are welcome, no matter if you're an official AGO member or not. Our mission is to share the glories of the "King of Instruments" with everyone. Perhaps you found this site because you are interested in becoming a member of the Chapter. We would be delighted if you would join our ranks. To join, go to agohq.org. Click on the Membership tab, then Join the Guild, and Join as a chapter member. We also welcome you to become a dual member with us and your home chapter. Thank you for visiting us. We hope that you will join us for one or more of our seasonal events. Members' recital on March 16Our chapter will celebrate Women's History Month with a members’ recital on March 16 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 1334 29th St. NW.
Come play a piece by a favorite female composer at this historic Georgetown church. Not sure what to play? In the January issue of The American Organist you will find many suggestions, including one of the five winners of the recent competition sponsored by the AGO Task Force for Gender Equity. The pieces will be published in the magazine starting with the January issue. Another apt choice would be a work by Florence Price to honor the 19th century black women organists who played at Mt. Zion. Finally, Woman Composer Sunday is March 9. Organists are encouraged to include works by women in their service playing on that day. Tri-Chapter recital on April 6The DC, Northern Virginia and Potomac AGO chapters are planning a joint recital on the Lively-Fulcher organ at the Franciscan Monastery in Northeast DC on April 6.
The monastery is at 14th and Quincy streets. Practice times are usually during the week after 5:30 pm. Specific times should be available for sign-up on March 10. We are envisioning three performers from each chapter for five minutes maximum each. All performers’ names, pieces, composers, and dates are due by Feb. 24. Questions? Contact Adam Scott Graham, dean of the Potomac chapter, [email protected]. |
