Music at Midday downtown
Music at Midday presents concerts each Friday from 12:15 to 1 pm. The fall season begins in September with three performances on the magnificent organs of National City Christian Church,  5 Thomas Circle NW, Washington, DC.

Sept. 11: Ohio organist Ralph Holtzhauser plays an
extended program dedicated to September 11 and to civil rights, performing works by Maurice Duruflé, J.S. Bach, Virgil Fox, Alfred Fedak, Florence Price, Iain Farrington,
and Phyllis Hall.

Sept. 18: California organist and composer Angela Kraft Cross performs her own recently composed Symphonie and J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in G.

Sept. 25: Organist Sondra Goldsmith Proctor (Canton, NY) presents a program titled “J.S. Bach and His Sons,” featuring works of the great master along with compositions by Wilhelm Friedmann Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Christoph Friederich Bach, and the lesser-known P.D.Q. Bach.

The Franciscan Monastery, 1400 Quincy St. NE, hosts a monthly Sunday concert series on its Lively-Fulcher organ. Each begins at 4 pm.

NOVA chapter events
Monday, Sept. 28, 7:30 pm: BachWalk: ​Early Musical Journeys of Johann Sebastian Bach
Mini-recital and premiere screening of a documentary by UCLA Professor and Director of Earmark Films Erin Marin.  Featuring performances by the current organists in churches where Bach played, and by notable German-American organist Christoph Bull.  The 30-minute movie will be preceded and followed by live performances of music by Buxtehude and Bach on the new Harrison & Harrison organ at Christ Church by Northern Virginia AGO members Chris Betts and JJ Mitchell. The mini-recital and film are free and open to the public.  (A chapter dinner and installation of officers will precede the program.) Christ Church, 118 N. Washington St., Alexandria. Monday, Jan. 11, 2027: AGO Diplomas Certification Workshop. New York-based AGO Certification Committee member David Schuler talks us through the process of applying for and sitting for AGO diploma examinations and shares tips for success. This event will be online. Details pending.

Sunday, Feb. 21, 4 pm: Northern Virginia chapter members' recital. Venue TBA. Alternative snow date is Sunday, Feb. 28.

Monday, March 8, 7 pm: Organ Control Systems Workshop. Chris Betts, managing director of Solid State Organ Systems and subdean of the NOVA chapter, sheds light on the mysteries of organ control systems and electronics -- switching and relays, capture systems, record/playback systems, and more.  He also offers advice on how best to use them and shares news of what's at the cutting edge in organ technology.  Solid State Organ Systems' U.S. office, 5600 General Washington Drive, Suite B212, Alexandria.

Saturday, April 10: Annual field trip to Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, PA. See and play the restored E.M. Skinner Op. 568 organ in the stunning Irvine Chapel and the esteemed Gillett & Johnson carillon.  Lunch is included. 

Sunday, May 16, 4 pm: Young Artists Recital. Some of the best young organists in our region will showcase their latest repertoire on the Steiner-Reck organ at The Falls Church Episcopal Church, 115 E Fairfax St., Falls Church. Some church parking is available off Broad Street.  Street parking on Fairfax Street. and around.

Friday, Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m. Brenda Portman plays repertoire from the past 100 years in celebration of the 100th anniversary of  St. Mary's Episcopal Church and the rededication of the church's newly completed Lively-Fulcher organ. The recital is co-sponsored by the Northern Virginia Chapter of the AGO. A reception will follow. 2609 N. Glebe Rd., Arlington.

Saturday, Oct. 24, 3 pm: Isabella Isza Wu, assistant director of music and organist at St. Paul's, K Street, plays a program including her transcriptions of music by Prokofiev as part of the Sterling Organ House series. 15902 Jerald Rd., Laurel, MD. $45 tickets include wine, snacks and a dessert reception. Tuesday, Jan. 5, time and place TBA: Twelfth Night dinner. Join us as we celebrate the end of the Christmas Season and the start of Epiphany with the Northern Virginia and Potomac AGO Chapters.
 
Saturday, April 17: Bush Hill Presbyterian Church hosts Todd Wilson and the King Street Brass in a recital. They will be joined by violinists Madeleine and Abigail Gabalski. The program will feature a new composition by Craig Phillips,for organ and two violins. They will also play Craig Phillips “Suite for Organ.” 4916 Franconia Rd., Alexandria.
