Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle (Lively-Fulcher)

The first organ of St. Matthew’s was built by Henry Erben. In 1951, M. P. Möller installed a IV/43 organ, located in a chamber behind the Blessed Sacrament chapel. Even with an antiphonal division added in 1974, the location of the instrument proved to be problematic, and confronted with the need for extensive rebuilding, the Cathedral authorities opted for a new, free-standing and encased instrument with mechanical action. The design of the white oak organ case is inspired by the Cathedral’s architecture.

The first phase of the organ’s construction, finished in 1995, featured a complete Récit expressif, an almost complete Grand Orgue (with a Grand Plein Jeu based on two 16ft flues and crowned with eleven ranks of mixtures), and some foundation stops in the pedal, retained from the former instrument. When completed, the organ will have an unusually complete stoplist, French in inspiration, but designed to allow the performance of a vast repertoire.
